The island splits into the busy north with the capital and the quieter, pricier south. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

• Castries. The capital and the most popular base, with the best transport and the widest choice of hotels and car rentals.
• Rodney Bay. The cheapest stays on the island, a white-sand beach, a marina and a laid-back resort feel in the north.
• Gros Islet. Next to Rodney Bay, famous for its Friday street party and bayside resorts.
• Soufrière. The priciest but most spectacular spot, at the foot of the Pitons, with hot springs and waterfalls.
• Vieux Fort. The south of the island by Hewanorra Airport, handy for a first or last night.

What to see in Saint Lucia

The island is small, so a base by the sea is easy to combine with trips inland.

• Gros Piton. Climbing the volcanic peak above the sea gives views along the whole coast, with no mountaineering experience needed.
• Pigeon Island. A former island now joined to the land, with remnants of forts and naval history.
• Castries Market. More than 300 stalls of local fish, vegetables, spices and herbs.
• Soufrière. The former capital, surrounded by sulphur springs, cacao plantations and waterfalls.
• Rodney Bay. A white-sand beach, a marina and a waterpark, ideal for a lazy day by the water.

The local currency is the East Caribbean dollar (XCD). Food can be cheap, with a meal costing a few US dollars and a loaf of bread about $0.70. Hotels and restaurants take cards, but street stalls and markets are cash only. ATMs are in the larger towns.

When is the best time to visit Saint Lucia

The climate is tropical and warm all year. The best time is the dry season, from January to April. That is also when prices are highest, with December the peak. September is the cheapest, but it falls in the rainy season and the hurricane-risk period. Booking ahead helps you catch a better rate.

Getting to and around Saint Lucia

Most long-haul flights land at Hewanorra Airport (Vieux Fort) in the south, while George F. L. Charles by Castries handles regional routes. Ferries also arrive from the Caribbean, including from Martinique (1.5h) and Dominica. Around the island, local minibuses are the easiest option, running between Castries, Soufrière and Vieux Fort, with a ticket costing about $1.50-3.70. Taxis have no meters, so agree the fare with the driver. A rental car gives you the freedom to reach the more remote corners.
