Where to stay in Lebanon: most popular cities

Most trips start in Beirut, but the coast north of the capital has its own character. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

  • Beirut. The capital and the widest choice of hotels, from hostels to 5-star properties. The Hamra district, the seaside Corniche and the nightlife are all within walking distance.
  • Jounieh. A bayside resort north of Beirut with the cheapest stays in the country. A cable car runs up to the Harissa shrine and there are restaurants by the water.
  • Byblos (Jbeil). One of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in the world. Old souks, a fishing harbour and ruins included in the ticket.
  • Batroun. A quieter town with beaches and seaside clubs, popular in summer.
  • Tripoli. The second-largest city, with the most expensive rooms on average but a rich old town of Mamluk architecture.

Nightly rates vary between cities. Here are indicative prices per night for a double room:

What to see in Lebanon

The country is small, so a base in Beirut is easy to combine with day trips.

  • National Museum of Beirut. The best introduction to the country, from the Phoenicians to Roman times.
  • Beirut Corniche. The seaside promenade where the whole city strolls in the evening. Cafes and views of Raouche Rock.
  • Old city of Tripoli. Souks selling gold, spices and brass, plus monuments from the Mamluk era.
  • Beiteddine Palace. A restored 19th-century residence in the Chouf Mountains, a top attraction close to Beirut.
  • Lebanon Mountain Trail. A hiking route running the length of the country, with sections for beginners and experienced walkers.

How much does a trip to Lebanon cost

The local currency is the Lebanese pound, but in practice you can pay in US dollars almost everywhere and most prices are quoted in them. A local bus ticket costs about $1.30. ATMs are easy to find and dispense cash in both currencies. Large hotels and chain restaurants take cards, while cash is handy in smaller places. A few days of groceries cost around $45.

When is the best time to visit Lebanon

In summer, from June to August, the beaches and clubs of Beirut are open and the weather is warmest. Skiers come between December and April, as Lebanon has ski resorts in the mountains close to the capital. Spring and autumn are pleasant for visiting ruins and cities without the heat. December is the most expensive month for a room, January the cheapest.

Getting to and around Lebanon

All international flights land at a single airport, Beirut-Rafic Hariri. Middle East Airlines runs regular flights from Europe, while travellers from further afield usually have a layover. Private buses and minibuses serve the country, with a ticket costing about $1.30. Taxis are popular in Beirut, where you agree the fare with the driver. Regular minibuses link Beirut with other cities, and larger buses mainly run the Tripoli route. In such a small country a rental car can be convenient, though city traffic is dense.
