ATMs are easy to find, and almost all businesses accept cards, so there is no need to carry large amounts of cash. A meal in a cheap restaurant is about 5 JOD (7 USD), and up to 30 JOD (42 USD) in a smarter place. Groceries for a few days run about 30 JOD (42 USD).
The most pleasant weather runs from March to May, which is why that is the busiest time with the highest prices. January is the cheapest. Summer heat can be harsh, but July hosts the famous Jerash Festival. Autumn is a good compromise between weather and room rates.
Most international flights land at Queen Alia Airport near Amman, less than an hour from the centre. A second airport serves Aqaba. You can also enter the country overland from Israel. Minibuses run across Jordan (leaving once full) along with more comfortable tourist coaches. The Amman-Aqaba route is served by JETT, and tickets are worth buying ahead. There is also one domestic Royal Jordanian flight between Amman and Aqaba. Renting a car needs a minimum age of 21, though an International Driving Permit is sometimes required.
A few recognisable properties from different cities for reference:
Prices are usually lowest in January and in midsummer, outside the prime tourist season. The most expensive time is spring, from March to May. March tends to be clearly cheaper than May, though the weather is similarly mild.
The most popular destination is Amman, the capital with the widest choice of hotels. From there it is easiest to plan trips to Petra, Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea.
The highest rates are in Aqaba on the Red Sea and in the Dead Sea resorts. The cheapest stays are in Amman and in the desert camps of Wadi Rum.
