The island combines beaches, mountains and a rich musical culture, so it is easy to match a trip to your interests.
The local currency is the Jamaican dollar, but US dollars are widely accepted and prices are often shown in both. ATMs are easy to find, and cash is often preferred outside large resorts in tourist spots. Hotels and bigger restaurants take cards. A week of groceries runs about $22-25.
The peak season and highest prices fall in February, in the middle of the Caribbean winter. September is the cheapest, but it falls in the hurricane season. April and May are quieter, milder months with fewer crowds and lower room rates. Jamaica Carnival takes place in February and the Reggae Sumfest festival in July.
The island has two international airports: Sangster in Montego Bay and Norman Manley in Kingston. Flights from North America and Europe are frequent. Jamaica is also a popular cruise port. Local buses and private minibuses (marked PPV or JUTA) run across the island and usually leave once full. Licensed taxis carry red number plates. Traffic drives on the left, and renting a car needs an International Driving Permit and a minimum age of 21. Scooters are also available to rent in Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and Negril.
A few recognisable properties from different cities for reference:
Prices are usually lowest in September, though that falls in the hurricane season. February at the peak of the winter season is the most expensive. April and May are a quiet compromise between price and weather.
Montego Bay draws the most properties and tourist traffic, with its own international airport. Negril and Ocho Rios on the north coast are also popular.
The highest rates are in Montego Bay and in the large all-inclusive resorts. The cheapest stays are statistically in Negril and in local guesthouses outside peak season.
Travellers from many countries enter Jamaica without a visa, and those who need one can get a visa on arrival. Your passport must be valid for at least six months. The allowed stay is usually 30 to 90 days, depending on your citizenship.
