Book a transferIceland is a volcanic island of glaciers, hot springs and the Northern Lights. Room prices are among the highest in Europe. We list 2 088 properties across 281 cities: from hostels and guesthouses to 4-star hotels and the first 5-star properties in Reykjavik. Below you will find indicative prices, the most popular destinations, season tips and transport notes.
The price depends on the standard, the city and the dates. The table shows indicative nightly rates for a double room. The cheapest month is usually April, while August, the height of summer, is the priciest. Booking ahead usually brings better rates.
| Property standard | Indicative price per night (from) |
|---|---|
| Hostels and guesthouses | from approx. 10,000 kr |
| 3-star hotels | from approx. 18,000 kr |
| 4-star hotels | from approx. 27,500 kr |
| 5-star and premium hotels | from approx. 45,000 kr |

Iceland revolves around Reykjavik and the stops along the route around the island. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:
Nightly rates vary between places. Here are indicative prices per night for a double room:
| City | Indicative price per night (from) |
|---|---|
| Reykjavik | from approx. 18,500 kr |
| Keflavik | from approx. 20,500 kr |
| Vik | from approx. 22,000 kr |
| Selfoss | from approx. 21,000 kr |
| Hofn | from approx. 22,500 kr |
Iceland is above all about nature: glaciers, volcanoes and geothermal pools.
Beyond the room, daily costs are high, among the highest in Europe. A restaurant meal and transport cost clearly more than on the continent. Cards work practically everywhere, including in remote places, so cash is rarely needed. Car rental is a major part of the budget.
The timing depends on what you want to see. Summer (June, July, August) is the mildest and easiest for driving around the island, but also the most expensive. The Northern Lights are best from September to March, especially in October, February and March. April tends to be the cheapest. In winter some interior roads are closed.
All international flights land at Keflavik Airport. It is served by Icelandair and many carriers, including low-cost ones such as easyJet. A weekly ferry runs from Denmark (Smyril Line). Iceland has no railway, so you travel by long-distance bus (from the BSI terminal in Reykjavik, with infrequent services) or, most conveniently, by rental car. Popular routes are the Golden Circle and the Ring Road around the island. Domestic flights cover longer distances.
A few recognisable properties from different places for reference:
Prices are usually lowest in April, while August, the height of summer, tends to be the most expensive. Booking ahead usually helps you find a better rate. Thursday tends to be cheaper than Monday.
The most popular destination is Reykjavik, which offers the widest choice of hotels in every standard. More travellers search for it than for any other place on the island.
The cheapest stays are in Selfoss and near the capital, where rates can be below average. The most expensive are in remote towns by the attractions, such as Kirkjubaejarklaustur or Vik at peak season.
Iceland is part of the Schengen Area. Travellers from many countries do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days and enter with a valid passport or ID. Some other nationals are issued a visa on arrival. The exact rules depend on your citizenship.
