Where to stay in Hungary: most popular cities

Hungary splits between lively Budapest, thermal spa towns and resorts along Lake Balaton. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

• Budapest. The capital and by far the widest choice of hotels, from hostels to 5-star properties. The most visited city in the country.
• Heviz. The famous thermal lake and a base of spa hotels with pools. Popular all year round.
• Siofok. The main resort on Lake Balaton, full of beaches and nightlife in summer. The peak season is July and August.
• Gyor. A handy stop between Budapest and Vienna, with cheap stays and a pretty old town.
• Miskolc. The gateway to the cave baths at Miskolc-Tapolca, with some of the cheapest hotels in the country.
• Eger and Pecs. Historic towns with wine, a castle and UNESCO sites. A quieter alternative to the capital.

Hungary combines big-city Budapest, thermal baths and the nature around Lake Balaton.

• Budapest. The parliament on the Danube, Buda Castle and the Central Market Hall. The city has a rich night life and easy public transport.
• Thermal baths. The cave bath at Miskolc-Tapolca and the spa at Sarvar are signatures of the country.
• Lake Balaton. The largest lake in Central Europe, with beaches, resort towns and a wine region in summer.

Beyond the room, daily costs are moderate. A cheap meal is about 1,800 forint (around 6 USD), a restaurant lunch about 4,500 forint (around 15 USD). A monthly transport pass costs roughly 9,500 forint. Cards (Visa, Mastercard) work in larger venues, while cash is handy in smaller places. ATMs are common.

When is the best time to visit Hungary

The most pleasant months are March to May and September to November, when it is warm and less crowded. Summer is hot and busy, especially around Balaton, and prices rise the most then. Winter can be cold but is the cheapest time for a stay in Budapest. The thermal baths run all year.

Getting to and around Hungary

Most international flights land at Budapest Ferenc Liszt Airport, with a second hub in Debrecen. Low-cost routes are served by Wizz Air, Ryanair and easyJet among others. MAV trains link the whole country, all main lines meet in Budapest and the fastest are the InterCity services. An extensive bus network (Volanbusz) reaches everywhere. The capital has a metro, trams and buses, while other cities rely mainly on buses. Motorways are tolled (a vignette).
