The currency is the Hong Kong dollar. A meal at a street stall is about HK$60 ($7.60), while a pricier restaurant can reach HK$800. Cash is still welcome and ATMs are everywhere, while chain hotels and larger restaurants take cards. It is handy to get an Octopus card for transport and small payments.
The most pleasant weather falls from October to December, warm and less humid. Summer is hot and rainy, but August brings the Hungry Ghost Festival, one of the major events. Spring can be foggy and winter is mild, so the city is comfortable to explore almost all year.
Flights land at Hong Kong International Airport, linked to the centre by an express train and buses. High-speed trains connect Hong Kong with Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing and Shanghai, while buses and ferries reach Macau and mainland cities. On the ground the MTR metro rules, with a ticket from about HK$5 to HK$55 depending on distance. There are also historic double-decker trams at a flat fare of about HK$2.60, plus buses. The easiest way to pay is the Octopus card. Traffic drives on the left, and renting a car rarely pays off.
A few recognisable properties for reference:
The most comfortable and often cheaper dates are spring and the summer rains, outside holidays and big trade fairs. Autumn, from October to December, has the most pleasant weather but is also a busier time. Booking ahead usually helps.
The most searched is the Islands District, close to the airport and Disneyland. Among city districts, Tsim Sha Tsui and Causeway Bay are popular, with good metro access.
The highest average rates are in Wan Chai and Causeway Bay. Central is the cheapest on average, while hostels in Kowloon have the lowest prices.
Citizens of most countries enter without a visa, usually for 30 or 90 days depending on nationality, and British citizens for up to 180 days. Hong Kong has separate entry rules from mainland China. Overstaying is treated very seriously here.
