Guyana is above all about nature, from waterfalls to savannah and wild beaches.
The currency is the Guyanese dollar. Cards are sometimes accepted in hotels and with tour operators, but cash still dominates, and ATMs are rare outside the main towns. For reference: a litre of milk is about $2, a loaf of bread about $1.20, and vegetables and fruit for a couple of days around $12. It is worth carrying cash.
Rains fall for much of the year, so there is no classic dry season. Most travellers come between November and January. Room prices are usually lowest in December and higher around May. If you plan trips into the interior, check local conditions on the route.
International flights land at Cheddi Jagan Airport near Georgetown. Connections from the US and Canada are frequent, while other routes usually involve a layover. You can enter the country by car from Brazil and Suriname. There are no direct international buses, so the alternative is a bus to the border and crossing on foot. On the ground, taxis and cheap local buses run, with a ticket around 100 GYD ($0.50). Traffic drives on the left, and renting a car needs a local permit, issued free at the airport.
A few recognisable properties for reference:

Travellers from the US, Canada and most of Europe do not need a visa. People from other countries usually apply a few weeks in advance, though the process is normally simple. The exact rules depend on your citizenship.
