Book a transferGuinea-Bissau is a small country in West Africa, known for the Bijagos archipelago and a calm, little-visited atmosphere. The choice of stays is modest, concentrated in the capital and on the islands. We list 30 properties across 6 cities. Below you will find indicative prices, the most popular destinations, season tips and transport notes.
The price depends on the standard, the place and the dates. The table shows indicative nightly rates for a double room. The cheapest month is usually February, while May is the priciest. Resorts on the Bijagos islands can cost far more than stays in the capital.
| Property standard | Indicative price per night (from) |
|---|---|
| Guesthouses and budget stays | from approx. 14,000 CFA |
| Mid-range hotels | from approx. 40,000 CFA |
| Upper-tier hotels in the capital | from approx. 90,000 CFA |
| Bijagos island resorts | from approx. 185,000 CFA |

Most travellers stay in the capital, with the rest of the offer on the Bijagos islands. These are the destinations chosen most often:
Nightly rates vary between places. Here are indicative prices per night for a double room:
| Place | Indicative price per night (from) |
|---|---|
| Bissau | from approx. 20,000 CFA |
| Bubaque | from approx. 21,000 CFA |
| Rubane Island | from approx. 185,000 CFA |
The country is above all islands, nature and the calm rhythm of West Africa.
The currency is the West African CFA franc. Cash is essential here, ATMs work mainly in the capital and rarely beyond it. Only a few upper-tier hotels take cards. It is worth carrying a cash reserve before heading to the islands, where access to banks is limited.
The climate is tropical, with a dry season from November to May and a rainy season in summer. Travel is most pleasant in the cooler months of the dry season. Room prices are usually lowest in February and highest in May. Boat trips to the islands are best planned outside the height of the rainy season.
International flights land at Osvaldo Vieira Airport near the capital, usually with a layover in Lisbon, Dakar or another regional hub. The Bijagos archipelago is reached by boat or ferry from Bissau, with the trip to Bubaque taking a few hours. Around the capital and the country, taxis and local minibuses run, with low fares but flexible schedules. Renting a car is possible to a limited extent, and roads outside the cities can be in poor condition.
A few recognisable properties for reference:
Prices are usually lowest in February, in the cooler part of the dry season. May tends to be the most expensive. Booking ahead helps especially with the island resorts.
By far the most common choice is Bissau. It is the capital, with the widest range of hotels and easy access from the airport.
The highest rates are at the resorts on the Bijagos islands, for example on Rubane. The cheapest stays are in guesthouses in the capital.
Most travellers need a visa. It can be obtained in advance at a diplomatic mission, while citizens of some West African countries enter under different rules. A yellow fever vaccination certificate may also be required. The exact rules depend on your citizenship.
