Accommodation is concentrated in the capital and a few larger towns. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

• Conakry. The capital and the most popular base, set on a peninsula by the ocean. The widest choice of hotels, from guesthouses to upper-tier properties. The National Museum of Guinea and nearby islands.
• Kindia. A town at the foot of the highlands, a base for waterfalls and the surrounding hills. A quieter alternative to the capital.
• Nzerekore. The economic and commercial centre in the south, close to the borders and forest areas.
• Labe. The main town of the Fouta Djallon region, a good starting point for the mountains and trekking.
• Coyah. Near Conakry, with stays along the route out of the capital.

The country combines coast with mountains and forest, so a trip plan depends mainly on the season.

• The beach at Cape Verga. One of the nicer beaches halfway between Conakry and the northern border, with bars and nightlife.
• The Fouta Djallon highlands. Canyons, waterfalls and peaks, including Mount Loura. A haven for hikers of every level.

Beyond the room, daily costs are low. A meal at a cheap eatery is the equivalent of well under a dollar, and a mid-range restaurant about ten. Cards are rarely accepted and most transactions are in cash, so it is worth exchanging money at the airport or before the trip. ATMs are few.

When is the best time to visit Guinea

Guinea is one of the wettest countries in West Africa, with most rain falling in July and August. From December to March the dusty Harmattan wind blows. The best time to travel is between these periods, in October and November, when it is dry but not yet dusty.

Getting to and around Guinea

Most flights land in Conakry, served by airlines such as Royal Air Maroc, Air France, Brussels Airlines and Turkish Airlines. Overland, you can enter from Sierra Leone, Senegal, Mali and Liberia, though some crossings only work in the dry season. There are no buses or trains in the country, and transport relies on shared taxis known as taxi brousse. Taxis are cheap and often hired for a full day on longer trips.
