Book a transferGambia is mainland Africa's smallest country, squeezed along the river of the same name and surrounded by Senegal. Its short Atlantic coast holds most of the hotels and resorts. We list 499 properties across 72 cities: from guesthouses to seaside resorts. Below you will find indicative prices, the destinations travellers choose most, and notes on season and transport.
The price depends on the standard, the location and the dates. The table shows indicative nightly rates for a double room. The cheapest months are the rainy season, August to October, while December at the peak of the tourist season is the priciest. Booking ahead usually brings better rates.
| Property standard | Indicative price per night (from) |
|---|---|
| Guesthouses and budget stays | from approx. GMD 1,700 |
| 3-star hotels | from approx. GMD 3,800 |
| 4-star hotels and resorts | from approx. GMD 6,000 |
| 5-star and premium hotels | from approx. GMD 9,400 |
Indicative rates, updated periodically. For exact prices and availability, select your dates in the search above.
Tourism is concentrated along the coastal strip around the capital. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:
Nightly rates vary between towns. Here are indicative prices per night for a double room:
| City | Indicative price per night (from) |
|---|---|
| Banjul | from approx. GMD 2,800 |
| Serrekunda | from approx. GMD 3,900 |
| Kololi | from approx. GMD 4,300 |
| Bakau | from approx. GMD 3,200 |
| Brufut | from approx. GMD 3,600 |
The country is small, so it is easy to combine the beach with nature and a river cruise.
Beyond the room, daily costs are low. A meal at a local restaurant is the equivalent of a dollar or two, and a GTSC bus ride costs from a fraction of a dollar to a few dollars depending on the route. Cards are taken mainly by larger hotels, while cash is essential elsewhere. ATMs are few and can be unreliable, so it helps to carry dalasi.
The best time is the dry, sunny half of the year, November to May, when humidity is low and temperatures reach about 27 degrees. November and February are especially good for birdwatching and wildlife. December is the peak season and the priciest. The rainy season in July and August is cheaper but more humid.
Most flights land at Banjul airport, served by airlines such as Royal Air Maroc, Brussels Airlines and TAP Air Portugal. Overland, you can arrive by bus from Dakar in Senegal. Within the country, shared taxis known as bush taxis run without a fixed schedule and can be flagged down anywhere. Tourist taxis have fixed fares. The state company GTSC runs a bus network along both banks of the River Gambia.
A few recognisable properties from different towns for reference:
Prices are usually lowest during the rainy season, from August to October. December, at the height of the tourist season, tends to be the most expensive. Booking a few weeks ahead usually helps you find a better rate.
The most popular base is Banjul, alongside the coastal strip with Serrekunda, Kololi and Bakau. That is where the widest choice of beachfront hotels and resorts is found.
The highest rates are in the Kololi and Serrekunda resorts at peak season. Guesthouses in Banjul and the off-season are cheaper.
It depends on your citizenship. Travellers from some EU countries, the UK, Canada and Australia do not need a visa. Citizens of certain countries get a visa on arrival, while others must arrange one in advance. Check the rules for your passport before travelling.
