Book a transferGreenland is the world's largest island, a territory of Denmark covered in ice and cut by fjords. Roads only link neighbouring houses, so you fly or sail between towns. The currency is the Danish krone. We list 96 properties across 11 cities, from rooms in homes to hotels with iceberg views. Below you will find indicative prices, the most popular destinations, season tips and transport notes.
The price depends on the standard, the city and the dates. The table shows indicative nightly rates for a double room. The cheapest month is usually February, while August is the priciest. It is an expensive destination, as everything is shipped or flown in.
| Property standard | Indicative price per night (from) |
|---|---|
| Guesthouses and B&Bs | from approx. 600 kr |
| 3-star hotels | from approx. 1,000 kr |
| 4-star hotels | from approx. 1,400 kr |

Nightly rates vary between cities. Here are indicative prices per night for a double room:

Greenland is a destination for lovers of raw nature and ice, not city sightseeing.
It is an expensive place. The currency is the Danish krone, and cards work in the towns. A meal in a cheaper restaurant is around 100 kr per person. Grocery prices are higher than in mainland Europe, as goods are brought in. It is worth carrying cash outside the larger towns.
Summer, roughly June to August, is the brightest and most comfortable time for hiking, cruises and watching icebergs. It is also when prices peak (highest in August). Winter is the cheapest (lowest in February) and suits the northern lights and dog sledding, but it is cold and dark. Weather can quickly disrupt flight plans.
Air Greenland flies year-round between Kangerlussuaq and Copenhagen, with summer links via Narsarsuaq, and flights from Reykjavik serve various airports. Greenland has no road network between towns, so you travel by plane, helicopter or coastal ship. The only city bus (Nuup Bussi) runs in Nuuk, larger settlements have taxis, and dog sleds appear in winter. Domestic flights and helicopters link the smaller villages.
A few recognisable properties for reference:
Prices are usually lowest in February, while August at the height of summer is the most expensive. Winter is cheaper but cold and dark. Booking ahead usually helps you find a better rate.
The most popular destination is Nuuk, the capital. It has the widest choice of hotels and the best air links, which makes it the natural base.
The currency is the Danish krone. Cards work in the towns, but it is worth carrying cash outside the larger centres. Prices are higher than in mainland Europe, as goods are imported.
Nordic and EU citizens enter with an ID card. Travellers from the US, Canada, the UK and Australia, among others, do not need a visa, just a passport valid for at least three months from departure. Greenland is not in the Schengen Area, so the rules can differ from mainland Denmark.
