The attractions are spread between the capital, the coast and the interior. The destinations travellers choose most often are:

• Accra. The capital and the most visited city. The widest choice of hotels, city beaches and good transport. The natural base.
• Kumasi. The heart of the former Ashanti Kingdom. The Manhyia Palace, a culture centre and the huge Kejetia Market.
• Cape Coast. A historic fort on the ocean, a memorial linked to the slave trade. Close to Kakum National Park.
• Takoradi. One of the cheaper cities, a port and a base for the western coast beaches.

Ghana combines beaches, history and nature, so it is easy to match a trip to your interests.

• The coastal forts. More than 20 former fortresses line the shore. The most notable are the castle at Elmina and Cape Coast Castle, memorials of the slave trade.
• Kakum National Park. A rope canopy walk suspended in the treetops about 40 metres above the jungle floor.

How much does a trip to Ghana cost

Daily costs are moderate. A meal in a local restaurant costs only a few dollars per person. Cards are mainly accepted by large hotels and restaurants in Accra, while cash rules day to day. ATMs are in the larger cities and some accept foreign cards. It is worth carrying cash outside the big centres.

When is the best time to visit Ghana

The most comfortable time is the dry season, roughly from November to March. July tends to be the most expensive, September the cheapest. The climate is hot and humid all year, and during the rainy season (roughly April to June and September to October) roads in the interior can be harder going.

Getting to and around Ghana

The main airport is Kotoka in Accra, served by carriers including Emirates, Air France, KLM and Delta. Around the country there are tro-tros (shared minibuses) and more comfortable air-conditioned long-distance coaches (such as VIP Jeoun). Africa World Airlines domestic flights link Accra with Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale. City taxis are cheap and easy to catch. A visa is required for Ghana and must be arranged before travel.
