Where to stay in the Faroe Islands: most popular cities

Almost all of the accommodation is around the capital and the airport. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

• Tórshavn. The capital and most common base, with the best hotels and free city buses. The easiest place to explore the islands from.
• Sørvágur. A town by the only airport, Vágar, close to the famous Múlafossur waterfall in Gásadalur.
• Klaksvík. The country's second city in the north, a base for the northern islands and the only place besides Tórshavn with public buses.

What to see in the Faroe Islands

The main draw is the raw nature of the North Atlantic, most accessible in summer.

• The Vestmanna bird cliffs. A boat trip among narrow rock formations where puffins and razorbills nest.
• Sørvágsvatn lake. The largest lake in the country, separated from the ocean by steep cliffs, also known as Leitisvatn.
• Tinganes in Tórshavn. A peninsula of old government buildings, some with grass growing on the roof.

Getting to and around the Faroe Islands

The only airport is Vágar, served by Atlantic Airways and SAS, with direct routes from Copenhagen, Paris, Edinburgh and Keflavík among others.
