Finland splits into the capital, the cities of the south and Lapland in the north. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

• Helsinki. The capital and most chosen destination, with the widest choice of hotels and the main airport.
• Rovaniemi. The gateway to Lapland and the official Santa Claus village, a base for the aurora and winter activities.
• Tampere. The second-largest urban hub, popular for city breaks and events.
• Turku. The country's oldest city on the Aura River, a base for the island archipelago.

When is the best time to visit Finland

Summer, from June to August, brings the most light and the most pleasant weather for the cities and nature. For Lapland, reindeer and Santa Claus, December is best, when the sun does not rise in the north, while the aurora is most likely from November to May. February tends to be the most expensive and April the cheapest. In winter, bring warm clothes and expect short days.

Getting to and around Finland

The main airport is Helsinki-Vantaa, served by around 30 airlines plus the Finnish carriers Finnair and Norra. Ferries link Finland with Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Estonia, some with cabins for overnight trips. VR trains are fast, with tickets from about 9 to 60 €. Matkahuolto buses reach everywhere and are the only overland link to Lapland. Domestic flights are worth it over longer distances, such as Helsinki to Oulu. A rental car helps outside the cities, and the roads are well kept, especially in the south.
