Egypt splits into historic Cairo, the Red Sea resorts and the cities along the Nile. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

• Cairo. The capital and the most chosen destination. A base for the pyramids of Giza, with hotels in every standard.

When is the best time to visit Egypt

The most pleasant weather for sightseeing runs from October to April, when the heat eases. April tends to be the cheapest and July the most expensive, even though it is high summer. On the Red Sea the season lasts almost all year, as the water stays warm in winter too. For Cairo and Luxor, the cooler months are better.

Getting to and around Egypt

Egypt has 8 international airports, and the national carrier EgyptAir flies to over 70 destinations. Ferries run from Aqaba in Jordan to Nuweiba, among others. Within the country, flying is the easiest option over long distances, with EgyptAir having the widest domestic network. Cairo has a metro with three lines and cars set aside for women, and a ride costs a few pounds. Trains link the cities, but foreigners face some restrictions, so buy tickets ahead. Long-distance buses reach everywhere, and tickets are best bought from authorised sellers.
