Algeria combines Roman sites, cities and the desert, so it is easy to match a trip to the region.
Beyond the room, daily costs are low. A meal is about DZD 350 (approx. USD 2.90), a transport ticket about DZD 25 and a day of groceries about DZD 1,200. The currency is the Algerian dinar. Cash is the basis for payments, and cards are mainly taken by big hotels and car rental companies. ATMs are in the larger cities.
The coast and the cities are best in spring and autumn, when it is not too hot. January tends to be the cheapest month for stays and August the most expensive. The Sahara is best visited in winter, as summers there are extremely hot.
The country has two main international airports: Houari Boumediene in Algiers and Es-Senia in Oran. Algiers has the most connections, while Oran is served mostly by flights from Europe. SNTF trains link Algiers with Oran, Annaba, Constantine and Tlemcen. Public transport outside the north is limited, and shared taxis known as louages are popular. Almost all travellers need a visa (usually for 30 days), which must be applied for before arrival.
