Beyond the room, daily costs are low. A meal at a traditional restaurant is about COP 50,000 (approx. USD 14.50) and a public transport ticket about COP 1,500. The currency is the Colombian peso. Not all places and shops take cards, so it is worth carrying cash. ATMs are common in cities.
The climate depends on the region and altitude, but in general the dry season is more comfortable for travel. October tends to be the cheapest month for stays and December the most expensive. The Caribbean coast is warm all year, while in the Andes the temperature depends on altitude.
International flights use Bogota (El Dorado), Cartagena and Cali among others. You can also arrive overland from Venezuela and Ecuador. Within the country, buses link most cities and a ticket rarely exceeds COP 150,000. Medellin has a metro, while other big cities use mainly city buses, with a ticket around COP 1,500. Renting a car is easy, but roads can have tolls.
A few recognisable properties from different cities for reference:
Prices are usually lowest in October, outside the peak season. December, over the holidays, tends to be the most expensive. Booking ahead usually helps you find a better rate.
The most visited tourist destination is Cartagena on the Caribbean. Bogota, Medellin and Riohacha in the north are also popular.
The highest rates are on the island of San Andres. Among the popular cities, Bucaramanga is the cheapest.
Travellers from many countries enter Colombia without a visa for stays of up to 90 days on a valid passport. The stay can usually be extended. The exact rules depend on your citizenship.
Hotels and many places take cards, but not all shops. It is worth carrying cash in Colombian pesos. ATMs are common in cities.
