Where to stay in Belize: most popular cities

Belize splits into reef islands, mainland towns and jungle bases. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

• Caye Caulker. A small, laid-back, car-free island loved by backpackers. The most searched destination in the country.
• San Pedro (Ambergris Caye). The largest island and the base for diving and snorkelling on the reef. The widest choice of resorts and mid-range hotels.
• Belize City. The main city and transport hub with the international airport. Good for the start or end of a trip.
• San Ignacio. An inland base close to caves, Maya ruins and jungle. Plenty of budget stays and guesthouses.
• Placencia. A beach peninsula in the south with the priciest hotels in the country. A quieter alternative to the islands.

What to see in Belize

Belize combines reef, islands and jungle, so it is easy to match a trip to what you are after.

• Islands and the reef. Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye are the base for the reef, the second largest in the world. Snorkelling and diving all year round.
• Hol Chan and the Blue Hole. The Hol Chan Marine Reserve and the Great Blue Hole, a famous circular sinkhole for divers. Entry to the reserve has a fee.
• Maya ruins. Altun Ha north of Belize City and other sites inland. Temples and views from the top.
• Jungle. Mayflower Bocawina park with waterfalls and trails, home to howler monkeys and many bird species.
• Belize Zoo. A small zoo of local fauna: jaguars, pumas, macaws and crocodiles, around 120 species.

Beyond the room, daily costs are moderate. A simple meal is about BZD 5 (approx. USD 2.50), a restaurant lunch about BZD 20 (approx. USD 10) and a transport ticket about BZD 2. The Belize dollar is fixed to the US dollar at 2 to 1, and US dollars circulate widely. Large hotels and attractions take cards, while cash is handy in smaller places.

When is the best time to visit Belize

The dry season runs from November to April and is the best time for outdoor activities, but it is also the price peak, especially in December. The rainy season from June to October is cheaper, with July often the cheapest month. Rain often falls in short afternoon bursts, so travel is still possible then. The hurricane season falls in late summer and early autumn.

Getting to and around Belize

International flights land at Philip S. W. Goldson Airport near Belize City, with direct routes from Miami, Houston and Newark among others. You can also arrive by bus or car from Mexico (via Chetumal) and Guatemala. Buses run across the country and there are domestic flights (Maya Island Air and Tropic Air) to the islands. On the atolls, water taxis are the easiest way around, usually running from morning to early evening. You can also rent a car, though most have a manual gearbox.
