Book a transferBhutan is a Himalayan kingdom between Tibet and India, famous for its Buddhist monasteries, pristine nature and carefully managed tourism. Entry involves formalities and a fee, and most stays are booked through a local operator. We list 85 properties across 12 cities: from simple guesthouses and homestays to 5-star hotels. Below you will find indicative prices, the most popular cities and tips on season and transport.
The price depends on the standard, the city and the dates. The table shows indicative nightly rates for a double room. The cheapest month is usually September, while May is the priciest. On top of the room, expect a daily tourism levy (the Sustainable Development Fee).
| Property standard | Indicative price per night (from) |
|---|---|
| Guesthouses and homestays | from approx. 1,700 Nu. |
| 3-star hotels | from approx. 4,000 Nu. |

Nightly rates vary between cities. Here are indicative prices per night for a double room:

Bhutan is above all about monasteries, valleys and mountain trails.
Bhutan is pricier than hotel rates alone suggest, because a daily tourism levy (the Sustainable Development Fee) applies for each day of your stay. The currency is the ngultrum, pegged to the Indian rupee. Cards are mainly accepted at the larger hotels in Thimphu and Paro, while cash is handy day to day. ATMs are in the larger cities.
The best times are October and November and spring, April to June, when there is less rain and pleasant temperatures. In spring, flowers bloom in the valleys and on the slopes. The cheapest month for a room is September, while May is the most expensive. Summer is the monsoon season with more rain.
The only international airport is in Paro, served by Drukair and Bhutan Airlines, with connections from India and a few Asian countries. You can enter by land from India through one of three crossings, including Phuntsholing. Within the country you mostly travel by government and private buses and by taxi in the cities, while Drukair operates selected domestic flights. Driving requires a permit, usually arranged by the local operator.
A few recognisable properties for reference:
Prices are usually lowest in September, while May is the most expensive. October and November and the spring are best for travel. Remember that a daily tourism levy applies on top of the room.
The most chosen is Paro, home to the country's only airport and the Tiger's Nest monastery. The capital Thimphu has the widest choice of hotels, while Phuntsholing is the cheapest place to stay.
