Hotels in Bhutan: your guide to where to stay

Bhutan is a Himalayan kingdom between Tibet and India, famous for its Buddhist monasteries, pristine nature and carefully managed tourism. Entry involves formalities and a fee, and most stays are booked through a local operator. We list 85 properties across 12 cities: from simple guesthouses and homestays to 5-star hotels. Below you will find indicative prices, the most popular cities and tips on season and transport.

How much does a hotel in Bhutan cost?

The price depends on the standard, the city and the dates. The table shows indicative nightly rates for a double room. The cheapest month is usually September, while May is the priciest. On top of the room, expect a daily tourism levy (the Sustainable Development Fee).

Most trips start in the Paro valley and around the capital:

  • Paro. Home to the country's only international airport and the Tiger's Nest monastery. The most chosen and also the most expensive stays.
  • Thimphu. The capital, with monasteries, museums and a weekend market. A wide choice of hotels, from simple to 5-star.
  • Phuntsholing. A border town with India, the cheapest stays in the country and a land entry point.
  • Wangdue Phodrang. The gateway to the Gangtey and Phobjikha valley, with lodges among the mountains. A good base for nature.

What to see in Bhutan

Bhutan is above all about monasteries, valleys and mountain trails.

  • Taktshang (Tiger's Nest). A monastery clinging to a cliff above the Paro valley, the country's most famous sight. Reached on foot or by horse.
  • Druk Path. A multi-day trek through the Paro valley, with remote monasteries, forests and mountain lakes.
  • Thimphu. The Tashichho Dzong monastery, the Memorial Chorten and the Changlimithang archery ground.
  • Punakha Dzong. An impressive 17th-century fortress where two rivers meet, one of the finest in the country.
  • Royal Manas National Park. A reserve in the south with water buffalo, elephants and even tigers.

How much does a trip to Bhutan cost

Bhutan is pricier than hotel rates alone suggest, because a daily tourism levy (the Sustainable Development Fee) applies for each day of your stay. The currency is the ngultrum, pegged to the Indian rupee. Cards are mainly accepted at the larger hotels in Thimphu and Paro, while cash is handy day to day. ATMs are in the larger cities.

When is the best time to visit Bhutan

The best times are October and November and spring, April to June, when there is less rain and pleasant temperatures. In spring, flowers bloom in the valleys and on the slopes. The cheapest month for a room is September, while May is the most expensive. Summer is the monsoon season with more rain.

Getting to and around Bhutan

The only international airport is in Paro, served by Drukair and Bhutan Airlines, with connections from India and a few Asian countries. You can enter by land from India through one of three crossings, including Phuntsholing. Within the country you mostly travel by government and private buses and by taxi in the cities, while Drukair operates selected domestic flights. Driving requires a permit, usually arranged by the local operator.
