Brazil has many destinations with different characters, from beaches to big cities:

• Rio de Janeiro. The most chosen city, with Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, Sugarloaf and Christ the Redeemer. The widest choice of hotels.
• Sao Paulo. The country's largest metropolis, a hub of business, culture and food. A huge base of hotels in every class.
• Florianopolis. An island with many beaches, popular with surfers and budget travellers. Plenty of hostels.
• Buzios. A trendy oceanfront resort east of Rio, with boutique hotels and nightlife.

Beyond the room, daily costs are moderate and vary by region. The currency is the real. Cards are in common use, including contactless, and the Pix payment system makes local transactions easy. Cash is handy at markets and in smaller places. ATMs are easy to find in the cities. At peak season, some hotels require a minimum of 3 nights or payment in advance.

When is the best time to visit Brazil

The peak season is December to March, the Brazilian summer and carnival time. Expect crowds and higher prices. The cheapest month for a room is July. For an Amazon trip, July to September is best, with less rain. In the southern-hemisphere autumn and spring, the cities are quieter and cheaper.

Getting to and around Brazil

The main airports are Sao Paulo-Guarulhos (the country's largest hub) and Rio de Janeiro-Galeao. You can enter by road via Foz do Iguacu from Argentina, and buses run from Buenos Aires, Asuncion and Montevideo. Within cities you travel by bus, and in Rio and Sao Paulo the metro is convenient. The rail network is undeveloped, so for longer routes people mostly use cheap domestic flights or long-distance buses.
