Book a transferBenin is a narrow country on the Gulf of Guinea, the birthplace of voodoo and a key point on the historic slave-trade route. Room prices are among the lowest in the region. We list 829 properties across 41 cities: from simple guesthouses to residences and 5-star hotels in Cotonou. Below you will find indicative prices, the most popular cities and tips on season and transport.
The price depends on the standard, the city and the dates. The table shows indicative nightly rates for a double room. The cheapest months are usually September and November, while December is the priciest. Booking ahead usually brings better rates.
| Property standard | Indicative price per night (from) |
|---|---|
| Budget guesthouses and hostels | from approx. 8,500 CFA |
| 3-star hotels | from approx. 23,000 CFA |
| 4-star hotels | from approx. 64,000 CFA |

Beyond the room, daily costs are low. A cheap meal runs about 2,000 CFA and a mid-range meal around 4,000 CFA. Cards are not widely used, so cash (the CFA franc) is the norm. Visa and Mastercard work at ATMs of the larger banks (Banque Atlantique, Ecobank, SGB) in Cotonou and Porto-Novo. Outside the cities, carry cash.
The best time is October to December, when the weather is dry and a little cooler. The cheapest months for a room are September and November, while December is the most expensive. The rainy season mainly falls between April and July. Entry requires a valid yellow fever vaccination.
The main airport is in Cotonou, with direct flights from Paris, Amsterdam and many African cities. You can enter by road from Nigeria and Togo, and daily buses run from Lagos and Niamey, all heading to Cotonou. Within the country, the most common way to get around is the zemidjan moped taxi (agree the fare before you set off) and buses run by lines such as Benin-Routes or Confort Lines. A single rail line links Parakou in the north with Cotonou in the south, but it does not run daily. Renting a car requires an International Driving Permit.
A few recognisable properties for reference:
Prices are usually lowest in September and November, while December is the most expensive. The dry season from October to December is the best time to travel, but December is the price peak. Booking ahead usually helps you find a better rate.
Most people stay in Cotonou, the largest city and business hub. It has the widest choice of hotels, from simple rooms to 5-star properties.
Citizens of African countries can enter visa-free for up to 90 days, while others usually need a visa arranged before arrival (an e-visa is also available). A valid yellow fever vaccination is required for entry.
Cards are mainly accepted at large hotels and restaurants in Cotonou. Day to day, cash in CFA francs is the norm. ATMs accepting Visa and Mastercard are found in larger cities; carry cash elsewhere.
