Azerbaijan combines a modern city, history and unusual nature, so it is easy to match a trip to your interests.

• Palace of the Shirvanshahs. A complex with a mosque and mausoleum in Baku's Old City, with sweeping views.

When is the best time to visit Azerbaijan

Winters can be bitterly cold and summers hot, so the best times are April to June and September to October. February and March are popular with skiers, when the mountains have the best conditions. January tends to be the cheapest month and May the most expensive.

Getting to and around Azerbaijan

International flights land at Heydar Aliyev Airport in Baku, from Istanbul, Moscow, London, Dubai and Beijing among others. Overnight trains and buses run from Tbilisi in Georgia, and there are connections from Russia, Iran and Turkey. Ferries across the Caspian Sea run on irregular schedules. A metro runs only in Baku, while other cities use buses and the state railway. Intercity roads can be narrow, so domestic flights with Azerbaijan Airlines are handy for longer trips.
