Where to stay in Anguilla: most popular areas

The island is small and most properties are close to the beaches. These are the destinations travellers choose most often:

• West End Village. The most popular area, with the best-known resorts and the beaches of the island's western tip.
• The Valley. The capital and administrative centre, with the museum and historic plantation houses.

• Long Bay Village. A quieter area with intimate properties close to the beach.

What to see in Anguilla

The island is mainly about beaches, but it also has intimate natural and historic sights.

• Beaches. Anguilla has 33 beaches, the most famous being Meads Bay and Shoal Bay East, with white sand and clear water.
• Sandy Island. A small sand island reached by ferry from the main island, known for a restaurant serving local seafood and lobster.
• Prickly Pear Cays. Cays to the north, ideal for snorkelling and diving among turtles, garden eels and rays.
• Heritage Museum. The island's only museum, with artefacts and the Heritage Trail past historic plantation houses.
• Catamaran sailing. A popular way to visit the smaller cays and neighbouring islands.

How much does a trip to Anguilla cost

The currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar. Cards are accepted in most hotels and venues, but it is worth keeping cash for small purchases. A cheap meal out is about 13 dollars per person, a mid-range dish about 47 dollars. You can exchange money at the airport. Anguilla is a rather pricey destination, with some of the highest room rates in the Caribbean.

When is the best time to visit Anguilla

The best time is December to May, outside the hurricane season that runs from June to November. At the peak of the season, especially February, prices are highest. September tends to be the cheapest month, but it falls in the middle of the hurricane season. Outside the peak it is easier to find lower rates.

Getting to and around Anguilla

The only airport has direct flights from San Juan in Puerto Rico and from nearby Sint Maarten. Most travellers fly into Sint Maarten and take the ferry from Marigot to Blowing Point on Anguilla, a crossing of about 30 minutes that runs every 45 minutes or so. There are no buses or trains on the island, and taxis with fixed fares across ten zones are the only option. Driving is on the left, and a local permit from the rental company is needed.
