The currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, and US dollars are sometimes accepted too. Card payments are the most common, and ATMs are easy to find on Antigua but scarce on Barbuda. A light meal at a street stall costs roughly 4 to 11 dollars, and weekly groceries about 33 to 37 dollars. When paying cash, it is best to use the local currency.
Peak season runs from December to April, when temperatures are milder and the weather most settled. That is also when prices are highest, with March often the priciest. September tends to be the cheapest month, but it falls in a time when some resorts close. Outside the peak it is easier to find lower rates.
The main airport is V. C. Bird International near Saint John's on Antigua. Direct flights run from the UK, Germany, Italy, the US, Canada and other Caribbean islands. Cruise ships also call at the islands. Public transport in the form of minivans operates on Antigua only and leaves when full. Driving is on the left, and a local permit from the rental company is needed. The Barbuda Express ferry runs to Barbuda twice a day, best booked ahead.
A few recognisable properties from different parts of the islands for reference:
Prices are usually lowest in September, outside the peak season. March at the height of the winter season tends to be the most expensive. Some resorts close out of season, so check availability before booking.
The most popular destination is the capital, Saint John's on Antigua. Most hotels and resorts are on this island.
Travellers from most countries, including the European Union, the US and Canada, can enter without a visa. Those who do need one apply online for the Electronic Entry Visa.
The Barbuda Express ferry runs between the islands, usually twice a day. In peak season it is worth buying a ticket ahead, and sailings can be cancelled in bad weather.
